Soprano Sue's Sightings

Interview 10/2003

John Fiore is one of the more unusual deaths on the show.    Around Thanksgiving, his character GiGi Cestone met his demise, naturally, while having an evacuation.    His demise, resulted in Ralph Cifetto (Joe Pantoliano) being promoted to a captain. An extremely talented actor, you may remember him from his character Detective Profaci on "Law and Order".  see bio at end Who was your favorite person to work with on the show?

With out a question, big Joe Gannascoli was my favorite person to work with.   We hit it off from day one, we had more laughs and chuckles in between takes and hanging out on the set.   Friends to this day.

Sue:   Joe misses you

John Fiore: I miss Joe

This is a serious guy here

Which Actors/Actresses would you most want to work with?

Al Pacino

How did you get your first break in acting?

Did a couple of things in Massachusetts, and then I came to NY. I was here a week when I got the role of Detective Profaci.    I had a recurring role on Law and Order for nine years.

What type of character do you find the most challenging to play?

Just an everyday kind of guy I guess.   When you’re in days to day circumstances, to bring that day to day to the role.   You try not to act it just to be it.

Are you worried about being typecast because of your work on The Sopranos?

Absolutely not

Who do you think was the funniest actor on the Sopranos?

In or out of character or both?    As their characters I think they’re all pretty funny. I think Tony  Sirico (Paulie Walnuts) is funny, Dominic Chianese (Uncle Junior Corrado) is funny. Joe (Joesph R. Gannascoli aka Vito Spatafore), Steve (Steven Van Zandt, Silvio Dante), Jimmy (James Gandolfini aka Tony Soprano), the cast is very funny as the characters.   Off screen Joe Gannascoli is really funny.   Vincent Curatola (Johnny Sack), Dan Grimaldi (Pasty Parisi aka Spoons Parisi) , Tony Sirico is a hoot, they’re all good

What was your most challenging role so far?

My exit from Law and Order and a 1998 TV movie called Exile.

What was it like when you found out that you had chosen to be on the Sopranos?

I was pretty happy about it.   There were no promises; it was to be a one-episode gig for all knew. My mood was tempered that it was to be a one shot deal, but it turned out to be more than that.

Since you’ve left the Sopranos, what other projects are you involved in?

Several low budget movies, one called Lift, another Sundown, a bunch of commercials, including a beer campaign in England.

What other jobs have you held?

I worked as a court officer in Cambridge Mass.   I owned Laundromats for a while.

Youre from the Boston Area, when you were on the Sopranos, did you live temporarily in the New York Area, or did you commute via Amtrak?

A little of both.  I commuted via Amtrak but also stayed for huge stretches of time. As I still do.

Joe Gannascoli speaks so highly of you, how much do you pay him?

I pay him by the inch

Are you Italian decent? If so, what part of Italy is your family from?

Yes, ½ Sicilian and ½ Napoleon

Do you use the internet?

Sometimes

Do you have any pets?

I have a beautiful Beagle named Moe

What do you do when you’re not working on a film project?

Play pocket pool

What are your goals?

To make enough money to send my kids to college

In your career, what has been your favorite role?

Detective Profaci on Law and order
